Customs said some were simply caffeine-based while others had controlled ingredients such as ephedrine, one of the precursors of methamphetamine. They are sent through the post and Customs said "many packages are opened and assessed each day", but it cannot screen them all.
Mephedrone, street name "Miaow Miaow", is sold online as an amphetamine substitute. An Australian website has been set up dedicated to reviewing these "legal highs", called gethigh. Its methods are far from scientific.
Diablo is described on gethigh. Another drug identified by Customs as being sold online as a legal high is mephedrone, which is known on the street as "meow meow". The synthetic compound is usually swallowed in capsules or snorted and is based on cathinone compounds found in khat, the east African plant that is chewed for an amphetamine-like stimulant effect.
With mephedrone now illegal in many countries, including Australia, sellers have moved to a new amphetamine-like substance, naphyrone, sold online as NRG There is no shortage of websites promoting concoctions the merchants claim will get customers legally high. But most operate outside Australia and finding those behind the plethora of powders, pills and herbs being posted into the country is almost impossible.
It was different with Wicked-high. When directed to the payment page, up came the name of another company and its Queensland bank account details. Behind the company was an award-winning website marketing guru. The website, and another site marketing the powder, also offers confusing advice to users. He said the reason he shut the website was because he did not want Wicked to be confused with his mainstream business.
But Mr Bridge said if there were laws that might save one synthetic drug user, then they should be applied.
