New Spring should be read after the third book.. The Dragon Reborn. It puts things in perspective on Aes Sedai and when and why the search for the Dragon began.
Robert Jordan planned for one of his prequels to cover the twenty years from the end of New Spring to the beginning of The Eye of the World. Your email address will not be published. If you are new to The Wheel of Time series you may be asking yourself, "Where does New Spring fit into the reading order? Others recommend reading it after book ten which was published in since New Spring was published in You ought, you must!
I read it after The Dragon Reborn as well. I thought that was a good place for it. Anywhere between "Path of Daggers" short story released to after "Crossroads of Twilight" book released. By that point in time you won't spoil some things hinted at in the main run. Aug 21, PM. I read newspring after memory of light, only because I wanted to remain consistent with the story and not jump backward.
I don't regret it at all after learning all the characters plots and the world of WoT it made it all the more interesting especially after a memory of light. So I say after. Oct 07, AM. I did some searching on a few other WOT forums and a lot say either after book 6 or in publication order.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? I'm on book 4 and am really intrigued to read it. Nov 04, PM. I read it between book 5 and book 6. It's basically a background story and I feel knowing the current story till ACoS gives one the best perspective to appreciate the events in NS. I read it in publication order myself. Mar 07, AM. Joined May 1, Messages I'd advise skipping it altogether. I started reading it after book 11 and I don't think it stacks up to the rest of the series. I found it boring and unnecessary. If you do read it, however, read it later. We should maybe ask Harriet Obtuse, By the time you get to book 11, the information in New Spring is just not fresh This is why I recommend it without saying specifically why - to avoid spoilage to those who are just starting the series, between book 4 and 5.
I have no judgment for those who did not like it, but it certainly gives back story and has a White Tower procedure that is not anywhere else. Maybe it is something they talk about in the Dragonmount forum Unfortunately, that ship has sailed for me, so I'll never know.

I thought it was an absolute gift that WoT fans got this before RJ passed on. The WoT world is a fascinating place that, in my opinion, rivals Tolkien and exceeds a vast majority of worlds in recent history.
The series might have gone down hill but Jordan was an absolute master in developing the setting for this series. I don't disagree about the world that Jordan created and I'm definitely a WoT fan. However, there are simply too many books out there that I want to read to stick with a book that I find boring and which doesn't even move the story forward. Joined Aug 18, Messages 6, Actually, I thought New Spring was really good.
It was refreshingly short and brisk, and added to my appreciation of Lan and Moiraine. I really liked it. I compared it to the longer, novel sized version that was later released, and I thought the extra padding took away from the story and made it somewhat bloated and boring.
I'd recommend checking out the shorter version. Zeratul Registered User.
